Southern Hummers Alpacas

Welcome to Southern Hummers Alpacas, owned and operated by Jay & Carrie Gamblin.  We have six acres in Glencoe, Alabama – located approximately 65 miles northeast of Birmingham.

Our journey into the wonderful world of alpacas began in February 2005 when we acquired a 6-month old, true-black, huacaya male along with a borrowed male as his companion. That spring we headed out west in pursuit of a female(s), visiting many farms along the way and attending our first alpaca auction. We returned home with a proven, bred female and a dream of what we wanted our alpaca farm to become. Granted we were off to a very slow pace in our new venture, we were still very excited to finally begin our “alpaca lifestyle.”

Our mission is and has always been to strive for the best quality fiber and the most sound animals that we can produce.  To reach this goal in the alpaca industry, we must educate ourselves about what things affect this mission’s end-result.  Genetics, nutrition, husbandry, and breeding management are just some of those things to be considered.  Since research on most of these subjects in the camelid world is ongoing, it’s important to keep on top of things.

Today, we have a herd of 16 including our Eight-Time Champion Herdsire, "HHF Son of a Gun," 2 up-and-coming junior herdsires, 8 proven females, and 5 maidens.  If your interested in starting your own alpaca venture let our knowledge, experience, and continued support make your dream a reality...
